The principal commission
You choose the stretch of weeks — exam term, monsoon, long vacation — and the rooms that matter. We draw loans by bay, the hour the queue forms, holds that leave the same day they return, and overdue clumps that follow a holiday rather than a habit.
The bound folio comes back with Mali Chanthara for a briefing of about ninety minutes. Arun Srisuk draws the sheets in the back room on Pradit Manutham Road. One branch and one season begins at 96,000 baht; the letter after we see your slips sets the figure.
Shorter visits
One open day seated beside the circulation desk, with a short written note the following week on queues, stamps, and the returns slot.
A written briefing on the reservation shelf: which titles return and leave the same afternoon, and which slips wait out the pickup window.
A half day with your own folio open on the table, so staff can read the sheets with pencils in hand. Up to twelve people.
Who writes to us
Most letters come from a university circulation supervisor or a municipal branch head in Bangkok. They can point to a cupboard of slips, a stamp book, or a printout their own registrar is willing to share on site.
A school library that lends sets to teachers, and wants those loans kept apart from the pupils’ shelf, is welcome too. We need a person who can explain the columns. We do not carry the live register out of the building.
The committee stopped arguing about students these days and started talking about the fourteen-day loan.
Field notes
An empty bay during exams often means the set texts are still out, not that the books have vanished between the shelf and the desk.
A drop in issues during the monsoon can be a crate waiting under a porch, not a sudden loss of readers.
Reserved books standing face-out still have a pickup window. The slip, not the spine, tells you whether the queue is moving.
